Fire Destroys Home; Arson Probable

Emergency services were called to the scene of a house fire in Schoolcraft early Thursday morning.

They found the house, located on Chevy Chase Boulevard, entirely engulfed in flames.  The services of three fire departments were called to fight the fire, which was finally under control after almost four hours.  No one was home at the time and no one was injured in the neighboring houses.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but arson is suspected.  The homeowners, who have asked that their name not be printed, recently testified against a Chicago-area man suspected of involvement in organized crime.  The Chicago branch of the Mafia may have hired an arsonist to burn the house and may or may not have planned for a time when the family was away from the home, says Schoolcraft police chief Tom Polanski.  The homeowners declined comment.

Cat Rescued from Tree

Once upon a time, when a cat ran up a tree we waited for it to come down.  The fire department was busy fighting fires.

Yesterday in Erinsborough, that was not the case.

A 9-year-old Himalayan climbed an oak tree on Hillcrest Street Thursday.  Its owner, 85-year-old Marcia Frost, called the fire department.

The firefighters normally would have politely told Ms. Frost that it was impossible for them to drop the rest of their work to help her cat down from the tree.

"We were having a slow day.  Not too many fires around on a calm spring day," says fire chief Patrick Raynes.  "We helped a woman save her cat, and she was very grateful, and that's our mission - to help people and keep them safe."

The cat, named Pookey, was in the tree for about three hours before Frost called the fire department.  When contacted for comment, Ms. Frost said, "I'm just so glad to have my Pookey back."
